Default accessory belt issues

I will pay someone to take pics of a 74 small block set up for me.

I cannot get alternator, powersteering belts/brackets to line up.

I have a short corvette water pump. I have bought 9 sets of 74 power steering brackets and pumps, hoses. Same with alternator.

My power steering bracket goes on engine mount then to adjusting hole on pump, other end of bracket bolts to lower two holes on block.

but pulley barely clears frame, pull it up to water pump direction to take tension out, it only has 1/4 inch to move?

Then my alternator belt hits the bolt going through the power steering cradle?

is the alternator a two pulley or a unique alternator?

I really really need this info, and will pay for detailed pics and explaination. I am not exaggerating on how long I have tried to get this figured out, and I am not a complete idiot.

I have vintage air, and those pulleys line up, and i have correct pulleys, even the crank is a two piece design. I know all the parts except alternator are right, because of number.s

Here are some pics of a 75 with a/c, should be the same as 74

Pump with the original alternator belt deflector.

Bottom view of ps pump mount. Note the 2nd bracket also mounting to the engine mount. this moves the ps pump towards the front more approx 1/8"+.

Pump mounted

Front view. Pump is very close to the crossmember. I have to move the pump all the way to the center of car and still push the belt around the pulley with a big screwdriver.to install the belt.

Notice on the alternator there is a space between the pulley and the alt fan. I put a 1/8" spacer in there to bring the alt belt away from the ps pump a little. The little bit of misalignment from that is negligeable because of the length of the alt belt.
Alternator is the same as 90% of all chevys of that era.

First make sure that the h dampner is all the way butted to the crank shoulder.
Then with the ps pump mounted make sure that the ps pulley is lined up with the crank pulley. I had to use the special puller/assembly tool to pull the pulley on the pump even closer to the xmember to line it up.

Then the alternator belt should just clear the deflector plate on the ps pump. The belt on the ps pump should place the pump away from the engine as much as possible to allow room for the lower part of the alt belt. This part of the alt belt should should end up inboard of the ps pump and outward of the ps pump mounting bolts.

Sounds like possibly your top alt bracket is not long enough.

It's tight but workable. If I had the engine out or body off, I would definately mod the xmember a little in this area. On my 77, I ended up removing the deflector and grinding part of the pump casting as a quick fix.

Here is a chart of belts that gives the lengths. 1/2" makes a big diff.

Sorry, these are all the pics I had on the computer.
Send me a dollar for the pics.
