I am trying to repair my horn button. Two of the three rivets were broken so I drilled out the third and tried to drill out what I thought was loose rivets in the button itself. Are these holes just for rivets or are they threaded? How can I put this thing together? Or am I barking up a wrong tree and have to buy a new one?
Yeah, they are not replaceable rivets. They are kind of crushed on the outside of that ring to hold it on. Once they are pulled back through the holes they are basically worthless. NOT GM's finest hour. You can TRY to drill very carefully and tap the holes for some tiny screws, or you can use JB Weld and hope it grabs onto what's left of the crush posts.
Jim Shea himself suggested small dabs of JB Weld to hold it all together again. Just remember whenever taking that horn button off to get a long flat screw driver under the contact ring and pry that instead of the actual button.
Thanks guys. I think that I will try a combination of the two. I'll try and drill into the housing, very carefully, and then tap the hole. I'll then use small screws dipped in JB weld to attach the parts. Wish me luck! Replacement buttons are way to expensive.
