Default '75 drivetrain strength

Got no joy posting this in the general section. Perhaps I should have posted it in the performance section in the first place.

I'm toying with the idea of building a 406 to replace this supposedly built up 350. I didn't build this engine and don't really think it's putting out like I'd like. I'm looking at near 500hp on the build and slightly more than that with the torque. Don't particularly race track or street, just like to go fast and the torque gets me there faster and makes it fun around town.

So, I'm wondering how much power the stock '75 drivetrain I have will take before failure. I've got a Keisler 500 in it at the moment. To the best of my knowledge the rest of it is stock or OEM replacement. I had some U joints replaced a couple months ago and will have to go in and spec them out for a better idea.

It really depends on your tires. If you have street tires, then your traction will break before any of your stock components assuming it's all in good health.

If you put on wide rear street tires or slicks, then you're looking at breaking U-joints, snapping spindles, and grenading your rear end.

Like I said, if you keep street tires on your car you'll probably be fine.

Street tires on the rear; P255's. Unless I get something real grippy or wide, I guess those can be a limiting factor. Makes me feel better.

Just curious..... why do you want to match a 500 HP engine with 255 tires on the rear? {Sounds like a terrible mismatch to me.}

That's just what's on there at the moment. Considering sending my carb to Lars to resurrect the engine. I already know the carb is way out of spec and it's murdering the 350 that's in there now. I didn't build up the 350 but, all things being equal, it should be smoking the tires already given the parts in it. Knowing the carb is wonky, it's a lot easier/cheaper to hammer at the carb and see the results than to dump 5k or so into a new engine.
Just looking ahead. If it comes to that, I'll be re-evaluating the tires and drivetrain. All I would need would be to swap engines, break it in, punch it and drift across into the neighbor's yard trailing U joints and tranny fluid.

i don't know if this was a fluke or not but my '75 had an issue with a rear driverside bearing, took it apart, the spindle was slightly twisted!(i'll try to find a pic) I have obviously sense replaced them ( they were stock) and have seen no problems as of yet. so if your looking for a weak spot, might be a place to start.

This guy is putting out way more than 500 hp and running 10's on G-70-15 bias ply tires.

Nice photo. Looks like a '68 with an LT-1/BB hood on it. What's your point? (I don't even see any tire smoke off that puppy. Can't be many 'horses' in there.)

I recognize that photo. I think that was the finals for the factory stock appearing, stock tires nationals. I forget the title of the exact match, but I think that was a ZL1 COPO Camaro against a L88. they were awful fast on stock tires. it's featured in several magazines.
