The letters started with the first month of model year production, so in 1968 A is for August 1967. That makes J = May 1968.
May 09 is the date the trim tag was stamped and attached to the body. The car was completed a day or two later.

Mike - the serial # I am looking at is 18800 out of 28566 which is about 65% through the model run. That means that they would have built 35% of the Corvettes that year from May 10th through July 15th. Does this sound right to you?
