How do you tell the difference between a Muncie M21 and M22 transmissions? Also, are all M21 close ratio? If not, how do you tell a wide ratio from a close ratio sans pulling it apart and counting teeth?
All M21's and M22's are close ratio , the difference in a M21 and a M22 is the angel of the gears. A M22 is a heavy duty unit designed for road racing like the Trans Am series racing. There is less angle to the M22 gears. That causes them to have a loud winning noise but are stronger.
The case on a M21 has a B at the end of the ID and a M22 has a C
M22's had gears with a higher nickel content, thus being stronger. The close ratio's was also a strength feature since the fall in rpm's from one gear to another was lower, hence less impact.
In the movie two lane blacktop you can hear the wine of the gears, I love M22s
That was a awesome movie!Have any idea where I can find a DVD copy of that? It's been years since I've seen it.
The M22 usually has no groves on the input shaft, the M21 has one,and the M20 has 2.The M22 has the drain plug at the bottom for the trans oil to be drained. The others don't.M22s,and all the muncies are great trans, but don't just get one because of the muncie hype. The Super T10 is also, a great trans, and usually cheaper. The Corvette speedo on muncie's is also,on the RH side, where the other mucies available in other GM cars is on the other side......
