I have a piston stop that bolts into the head bolt locations (heads were not on) is how I got TDC. I agree with you I may have messed up installing the pointer. Tonight I am going to verify TDC and adjust the pointer if needed.

Im not sure how you used the stop, and you may know this, but you cant just run the piston up to the stop and call it TDC.
Usually you run the piston up to the stop and mark your degree wheel. Then you turn the engine in the other direction up to the stop, and mark the wheel again. One half way between the marks is true TDC.
The reason for that is that the piston will dwell at the top for several degrees of crank rotation, so you cant "eyeball it" or use a dial indicator to find it.
