As one poster mentioned previously.... you can drive them very quickly without too much effort at all..... no real effort required.
Anyone can drive a Porsche.

But I would still rather drive MY 68 convertible.
I may not be as quick, but I sure as hell will have more fun.

....skipping sideways unexpectantly over bumps in mid-corner, grabbing a full turn of opposite lock as the tyres howl and the rear swings around... the heart skips a beat, you reassess the situation, holding an awkward stance, as you power on...and straighten up... then the sound.... that glorious sound of a V8 chevy spinning hard.. the staccato beat rising to a beautiful crescendo as you reach for that next gear.... or dive on the brakes, hopeful of pulling off enough speed as you start turning into the next corner to repeat the process...

And when you finish the session, you know you've worked bloody hard at it.....
Not everyone can drive a Corvette....
Damn!! now i need a cold shower!

I couldnt agree more with you...but C3's, like all hot chicks, are cheap to 'buy' but rather expensive to maintain

I forgot to mention in my previous post on this topic that my dollars go MUCH farther on my Corvette than they do on the Porsche. Corvette- easier to work on, don't need a garage full of specialized tools to work on them, parts are much less expensive, can't EVER be compared to a Volkswagon. Porsche- pain in the *** to work on, almost everything requires specialized tools (that are expensive), can be compared to a Volkswagon (why people see that as a bad thing I really don't know- the engineering on those early cars was so far ahead of its time).

I have had 5 vettes. I have the virus.

I also have had several other sport cars. If I had a porsche dealship in my home town, that is what I would be driving. It is absolutely the best handling car I have ever driven. The faster you go the tighter it gets. I took an old stock 911 I owned and lapped new cars which were built up for road racing. It stops and go like no other. There many reasons you see 911's in every kind of racing, but mainly because they are best all around sports car.

I would rather have my 68 for the weekend cruise and show scene, but I would rather drive a porsche day in and day out if I could have it maintained locally.

A friend of mine years ago had an early 70's 911T. He took off the fuel injection and fitted it with six single barrel Weber carburetors. The car was quick and handled great but on the Saw Mill River Parkway in New York, which was very windy and had two lanes each way (55mph limit), he and his car were no match. He couldn't pull off my bumper when I was behind him, even through the turns, and I could pass him at will (yes, I was young and stupid and this was at high speed). His father also owned a 356 and 914. He was not happy that he could not pull away from my '68 Corvette big block, a piece of Detroit iron. I think Porsche owners feel that their cars are a "cut above" our Corvettes, despite in some instances our Corvettes out performing the Porsches.

Overall a Porsche is a fine automobile, in a lot of ways the comparison between American cars and Europeans cars remain. American cars were using 7 liter engines (427) and Europeans were using under 3 liters but getting the same or close to similar performance.

In the late 80's I was working as a mechanic, and one of the cars that came in for regular service was a 911 owned by a local attorney, so I drove it several times. To me the Volkswagon comparison is dead on.
The rear engine and pedals sticking up from the floorboard instead of hanging down, made it feel just like driving a VW Beetle. I was not impressed.

Default C3 vs 911 ... which one?

Its easy for me! I love my old 71 Vette and I would not have a 71 911. However I do want a NEW 911 GT3. Why, because its nearly the perfect car for me. Very very fast, stable a real race car for the road. Old vettes to me are about something totally different, its the sight, the sound and the smell. Its the great feeling knowing that you "made" it, fixed it or upgraded the car to its present state. You just can't compare a new 911 with a great old C3. I just want one of each!

Where have you been? The 911 was introduced in 1964, the same year as the Mustang. The Corvette was introduced in 1953. Get your history correct.

No joke.

My step-father builds circle track race motors most of the time, but he also works heads for all kinds of cars (he used to CNC Doug Rippies LS1 heads). He does air cooled Porsche heads, wild drag race big block chevs, etc.....

His old saying is "there is always someone out there with more money than you."

Oh, and while your at it, don't forget how well the ferraris of the same year handled, sure, they cost 4 times as much, but how about that italian leather? 70s-80s- 911 motors sound like a handfull of bolts in a speed dryer.
Why do we do this, can't we all just get along? I don't own a 911, but have driven several, and I own a 914. Yes, Porsche's originally came from VW parts, just like our Corvettes come from Chevrolet. That is not a bad thing. No way can a stock C3 handle like a stock 911 or 914, but that is why we work so hard to modify and improve them. Heck, a late C4 will outhandle and outrun our beloved C3s, not to mention C5s and C6s. But a non-turbo 911 can't outdrag some of our beasts. Don't hate your neighbors 911, he doesn't hate your C3. If he does, too bad, his ignorance. The Corvette is a phenomenal car, all years, so is the Porsche. Enjoy your choice. Now, what's wrong with Ferrari leather?

I have a 70 454 vert. My neighbor has a new 911. His car is beautiful, but so is mine. His engine sound like a sewing machine, mine doesn't.

This topic hits very close to home. Growing up my dad had- vettes 74, 77,79, then 911's 80,84,87 turbo, then back to vettes -94 zr1, 97 and 01 c4s. (Isn't leasing great?)

I personally own a 70 454 vert and a 2001 Porsche 996 (911). I'm restoring the 454 now -doing it myself, I won't even try to change the oil on the 996.

A c3 compared to a 911 S or SC- C3 has low end/torque, softer ride, rattles. 911 more solid, higher reving, tighter ride, stark interior.

Comparing c4/5 to 996- vette's more comfortable, handles as well, C5 is solid, smoother ride but feels a bit heavier. Vettes got the low end and power advantage. Porsche still fun to drive in the curves, more luxury than air cooled 911.

C6 vs. 997- base C6- 430 HP./ $50K - base 997 - 330 hp./ $80K. Both excellent cars... If I were buying today, I'd be in the Chevy dealership.

No offence to anyone, but this is a Corvette forum, not a porsche forum. re read some of the posts prior to mine, you would think a C3 weighed 4100 lbs and had a 2.3L motor. C3s are what they are and 911s are what they are, both have thier strengths and weaknesses. I choose the 'Vette as my road weapon. The 'Vette feels ponderous, big and loud. The 911 feels tight, tiny and sounds like a sewing machine. It cost twice as much, but doesn't have a chance in the quarter mile. It will out handle a stock set up 'Vette, but so will a MG. The Cars are what they are, I just don't like hearing "hom much better" the little beer rocket is then my Detroit steel. that's all. Now would I turn down a 911 if someone was inclined to give me one? No. would it be fun to drive? Probably. but I bet my 'Vette would see more 'air time' any day of the week. 'cause it's just a better, nicer, more beautifull car,, that's all

Porsche Vs. C3

...is like to compare bananas and onions..... too much different things!

Anyway my wife is a Porsche fan (sigh....) and due to the fact we can't afford two sport cars at time (nobody can touch my C3..... and we must have a family car wich is a BMW-X5) before of the actually C6 we owned a Porsche 996.

Wen I was young I owned a 1974 911 Targa.

So I can compare my C3 with the old 911 and the actual C6 with the previous 996.

-VINTAGE MODE "ON"-

About performances the 74 911 was nothing more and nothing less of my C3 when (long time ago) was stock!
The way to reach that performance WAS really different!!!!!!!!
In one word...

Corvette = GRUNT !
Posche = WHAAAAAAAAAA!

.... low end torque Vs. high end power

-VINTAGE MODE "OFF"-

Let compare C6 amd 996 only with TWO words....

C6 = GRUNT+WHAAAAAAAA!
996 = ONLY WHAAAAAAAA!

Anyway I must admit better brakes on the Porsches (yesterday and today).... and a bit better handling (even yesterday and today)

BUT.........

No one must think that a Porsche is a car easy to be pushed to it's limit!!!
Of course, that limit is very high...... but when you reach it.... the car become very complex!

Very understeering at the beginning of the corner........ very oversteering coming out from the corners!
You really must brake very hard until the insertion in the corner in order to charge a lot the front wheels...... and only after the chord you must start depress the accelerator very carfully!!!
This is due to the car cofiguration...... rear engine nearly centered on the rear axis!!!!
Of course the 996 is a lot easier than the old one....... and for this reason, to let you know guys, in Italy (where there is and was a lot of Porsche owners) was very very usual to put a bag of sand in the front trunk!!!!
Corvette is very easier ad the limit...... basically for it's nearly perfect weight distribution!

P.S.

I LOVE CORVETTES AND MY NEXT MOVE WILL BE TO SELL THE C6 TO BUY A Z06!

The History is Correct. The first Porsche was built in 1939 ( Porsche 64) of which we eventually got the 356 in 1948 of which the 911 was eventually based on. Porsche had had success in racing way before the 911 of 1964.

Your post was about the 911 not the 64 or whatever it was. I didn't realize we were comparing the Corvette to everything Porsche ever made. That's a little unfair don't you think?

From the original post:
Whats all the hype about this Icon that has been around longer than the Corvette and costs double the price. Why are most of the magazines always using a Porsche 911 as the standard for Performance. Is this guy just bias, ignorant,or onto something?

Why are we comparing the Porsche 911 to the C3 Corvette? Chevy makes a great sports car. Porsche makes great sports cars. Let Road and Track do the comparisons. Go out and enjoy whatever you choose as your sports car or sports cars. I enjoy each of mine, well maybe not the Fiero so much, but even it gets me to work in the rain and gets 30mpg.

Another 911 related story: I worked with a guy back in the mid 90’s who purchased an ‘88 911 Turbo without telling his wife. He kept it in one of those self storage places for nearly 2 years before telling his wife. This guy was my hero!

BTW this was a nice clean car. I like Porsches and the 911 Turbo models in particular. His had a soft bottom end, but the kick from the turbo was a lot of fun. The car was quick, but not crazy fast. I thought it handled well and had a light “flickable” feel to it. I was under whelmed with the interior, but the car was tight and genuinely fun to drive.

First, I have to admit I find the looks of a Porsche to be very ugly, like a VW on HGH. I think most people say they Porsche is a lot better, not becuase it is, but mostly because they think they have to say that. It's like the difference between a Caddy and a Lexus, if a person was blindfolded and sat in the rear of each car, if the ride felt firm and he was told it was a Lexus, he would marvel at the road holding ability, if told it was a Caddy, he would say the car rode harsh!..just my opinion!
