been fumbling with the climate control on my 74. its a convertable so i'm not too concerned about the a/c for the summer, however i would like to have some heat in the winter. I got the blower motor working at all of the speeds, i can hear it running. but theres hardly any air coming out of the vents! i can hear the vacuum solenoids operating when I turn the wheel so I don't think they are the problem. I've heard of the airboxes filling up with leaves and debri, any way of checking that without tearing my dash apart?
I would start looking at things involving air flow beginning with the pax side cowling area just above the firewall. You may find a lot of leaves, etc., in this area, and if you do, there's a good chance that such debris has worked its way into the air flow system. You can also take apart the duct work under the dash and take a look at the vent (door) behind the pax kick panel. However, as you mentioned, leaves, etc, can work their way into the evaporator housing and there's good chance that that is where your problem is. To dismantle and clean that area is a rather labor intensive job. You can also pull the fan motor and have a look.
One other thing, I don't know how long you have had this car but C3's are not know for heavy air flow. Good luck.
Just because you hear some hissing when your heater/AC control is moved, doesn't mean that the servo is actuating anything. The servo could be bad, the actuator arm could be loose or dislodged, the door could be stuck closed, etc, etc.... Check the easy stuff first; but then you've got to take things apart to check that the system is actually operating as it is designed.
