Getting ready for the first oil change since engine rebuild. 454 with mild compression (9.5). What filter and oil would you guys recommend? synthetic? weight? make?
thanks for the input
Is this the 500 mile oil change or something else?
I like Amsoil products. They make their own USA filters, HIGH quality, and their AMO SAE Synthetic 10-40 has high levels of zinc to help keep your cam from wiping.
IMHO, I too have a rebuilt 454 with a mild cam. I live in central Florida so temps are nearly the same as yours. My preference is Valvoline Max life 20W50. My choice in filters K & N. again just my $.02.
thanks for the input, I do like the k&n filters due to their design (allowing use of socket to remove), I like the idea of a "thicker" oil, but also like the idea of saving my cam with higher zinc....time for some google research. BTW, yes it is about 500 miles, took a long time to sort cat out so timewise its been approx 6 months.

Just a note...that nut formed to the bottom is for sales hype. You should only be hand tightening the filter to begin with and if you need the socket to get it off it's on too tight. I like the grip Fram puts on their filters but Frams are junk. Wix is a good filter too, very cheap, but I have switched to Amsoil.
I have a rebuilt 355 400hp & use Valvoline Racing Oil. 5w30 for first 1000 miles then 20w50 from then on. I use a Napa Gold 1qt oil filter so I'm running 7qts w/my 6 qt pan. If I were to use a Synthetic brand I would use royal purple, keeping the Napa Gold filter.
Search out & bend over for the hardest to find & priciest O&F available ... just kidding ... non-syn Shell Rotella T 15W-40 & Wix will be fine for a long long time.
I was told to run Dino Oil for the first 2k. Syn doesn't allow rings to seat, or so I was told. After the 2k I went with TORCO full syn 20w50.
Thats exactley what I did....Broke her in with Castrol GTX then at 2,000 switched to Redline n now at the 3,500 mark shes running better then ever n not one drip of oil anywere.....Jerrylee///

I also use amsoil products in everything I run, cars trucks, 4 wheeler, boat, they have a product for every application and there are thousands of dealers around the US. Plus its made in my hometown, and a sponsor of CF.
I agree, dont use syn for the first 2k miles. Which ever oil and filter you choose will probably be fine. The fact that you are consious of doing your oil changes when you should will give your engine a long healthy life!!

The AMSOIL SAE Synthetic High Performance 10w40 mentioned above does retain high levels of ZDDP additives despite the new API standards (which have impacted diesel oils as well so the Shell Rotella option isn't as good as it used to be).
