What Tires came on 68-72 vettes
OK..
I may have made a mistake ... Can someone tell me what tires came on a 70 vette? I assumed it was either a Firestone wide oval white wall, or a Firestone wide oval with raised white letters, or Goodyear raised white letter polyglas... I've also seen Goodyear Wide Tread.... I bought the Goodyear raised white letters that say
"Goodyear Polyglas F70-15" Did i make a mistake!!!

It's my understanding that "Polyglass" tires were "not" used as original equipment tires as they were "glass" belted tires and not rated for the high speeds that the "Speedway" 2-ply nylon were rated for.
I can't speak for any other year.

During the 1970-1972 time frame, tires were supplied by Goodyear, Firestone, and to a much lesser extent Uniroyal. They were sized in F70-15 (26.92" tire height) and available as a blackwall (standard), white stripe, or white letter configuration.
Construction, as noted earlier, was two ply nylon. These tires were designed for speeds of 140 mph and while there was no official speed rating associated with tires in this era, they were the forerunners of today's modern speed rated tires. While I hate to use the word "never" when it comes to these cars, the use of Polyglas tires on a Corvette falls under that heading.
Current reproductions of these tires range from good (Goodyear - Kelsey Tire) to marginal (Firestone - Coker Tire) to non-existant (no one makes a reproduction Uniroyal in F70-15 that I am aware of).
Regards,

Safety Car
I don't believe anyone sells Goodyear repros. My guess is that Goodyear will not license their product. Now you think if they won't license them that they would sell their own repro line. You may want to dig a bit as GM was famous for using multiple brands of tires on the same models. You may find that Firestones were also used and then you could use a Coker replacement. Personally I think that judging in the areas of safety affected items should be loosened some, like on tires. As long as the tire on the car is proper for the era (e.g. bias ply) I think they should not ding a judged car if it is a different brand. From what I have seen, all it provokes is collectors to drive to events on tires that are unsafe and substandard. I have seen many cars roll in on 20-30 old tires so they don't lose points in judging. I wonder how Bloomington Gold would fair in court if one of the participants on the test drive blew an orgininal 30 yr. old tire and cause someone to get seriously hurt. I know how I would vote if I were a juror. I am in the same boat as my '78 Pace came with Goodyear GTs with the outlined white letters. While I would love to have a set and have had opportunity to buy some used, I will not risk my safety, my passenger's or someone else's in public so I can save a point or two. There have been tons of articles of late stating that if a tire has exceeded the warranty specs it cannot be trusted. The depth of the tread is not the only factor. Rubber rots and breakdowns as well as the belts and other components. Just my 2 cents.

Kelsey Tire is the sole distributor of Goodyear reproduction tires.
There are other companies that advertise/re-sell them, but ultimately, they are coming from Kelsey tire. Kelsey has been in the tire business for a while and the Goodyear reproduction tires they offer for our cars are much better than the Firestone reproduction tires that Coker offers.

The original equip on my 70 LT1 convertible was Goodyear wide tread not polyglass. Here is where I purchased the reproductions from.http://www.universaltire.com/cart.php?

I would go with Goodyear repos instead Firestone. They are a better tire and all of the factory original tires on 1970's corvettes I have seen have been Goodyear.

Polyglass Tires
My 72 BB Coupe has the original spare on it. It is a one owner c3 with 74k on it. I can't post pics or I would. The car needs to be restored, but it is a numbers matching BB Coupe.
I googled f70-15 and came up with this
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...lyglass+f70-15
lots of results

Firestone Tires
I still have the spare from my 1 owner '70 ... I just checked and it is an F70-15 Firestone Super Sports Wide Oval tire with a white stripe.
