I am considering buying this corvette i saw advertised with pics, and have a few newb questions- here is part of the ad :
"The motor is 100% custom. It was machined by a company that does Pro Drag Motors. There were only 2 of these motors ever built. The engine is a high compression motor 1000 horsepower and shifts at 10,000 RPMs. It has 13 to 1 compression. The engine itself cost 25K dollars. It is hooked up to a turbo 400 tranny that leads to 4:11 gears. There is a Hurst slapstick shifter and an electric fan. The motor is setup for NOS and runs on 120 octane. You can switch the carburetor to run it on a lower octane."
If it shifts at 10000 rpm, can i drive it around town in its first gear?
Or does this mean it has the abilit to shift at 10,000 and can shift lower than that?
how many gears does a turbo 400 have?
would this be hard to shift for an average person? dangerous to drive on the street?
Is there i way i could make it shift like a somewhat normal car or is it the way the motor was made?
This would not be a good car for the street!! I really dont think the motor would run on pump gas, too high compression. The trans probably has a way high stall, and would overheat and burn itsself up cruising around town. If you are looking for a street car I would find another one.
This is for racing only not for the street. to answer your other questions
A turbo 400 has 3 gears. It redlines at 10,000 RPM. It would shift gears using all 3 gears in town. This is the type of car that gets trailered to the track, raced then trailered home.
No kidding a T400 is a 3 speed auto, The motor is a full race motor changing the carb has nothing to do with what gas you run in it. It will need race fuel regardless and you would burn the motor up changing carbs. Sounds like a BBC I wouldnt shift it anywhere near 10k, unless you want the bottom end vented.
I wouldn't run it on the street if you aren't used to race cars. this will be a complete monster.
I told you i was a newb, knew the 350 was a 3 speeed auto so i thought the 400 would have 4; no need to be a c*ck. its also a manual not an auto in this one. heres the link, i just thought it was a reallly good deal to pass up.
I'd pass on it, after reading the description I think their full of it. The pictures don't reflect a 10k paint job, tires are flat, I'd have to say the car was not well look after through the years. The price is up to $5k now not worth that.
Your profile say's you have a 1978 - 454, spend your time, money and effort on that car, at 18 you have a way to go before you enough wrench time for a drag car.
Not trying to be real negative here, just calling it as I see it, you ask what we thought, thats my 2 cents.
Hey you never know. I see aluminum heads, good intake and a Dominator. Maybe it's a 540 or larger? Maybe it has a Tom's IRS under it? It may have lots of good parts there. I'd ask questions......
