Default Spark Plug Problem

IM TRING TO CHANGE PLUGS ON 72 454. OLD ONES WERE R44XL WHICH HAVE A LONGER THREAD. car calls for a r44t. problem is the threads with the r44t dont reach threads in block because threads start about an quarter inch in head. does this mean this car has wrong heads? and what plug will work/ i cant find what i took out anywhere.

Advance Auto Parts shows they have the R44XL plug http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...rtNumber=R44XL

They list a store at 640 Luzerne St in Scranton. I deal with them here and they are great to work with.

Use R45XLS, which is a 3/4 reach plug requiring the gasket or washer.

I believe the R44T is a tapered seat plug for a later BBC engine.

this is correct . i found out my heads are probably from a 68. any idea why someone would change heads? also does this mean loss or gain in performance?

Default 396/427 Heads on a 454

The combustion chamber is smaller {closed} than the 454`s which is open. Yes as long as its been run before and obviously has been run this way the compression will be higher. Not really a bad move for some cheap HP by merely using a early 396/427 head
