Default 82 trans removal

It's time to send my '82 700r off for a rebuild.

Will 21 inches of clearance below the frame be enough room to get the tranny out of the car using a low profile trans jack?

The FSM calls for a converter holding tool before separating the transmission from the engine. Is this tool easy to find, and is it possible to pull the tranny out safely with out it? Thx.

The FSM tooling is applied on the theory that (A), all the factory recommended tooling is available and (B) it's not broken/damaged.

I've pulled many a trans (15+ years working at Chevy dealers) and never used it. No problems. The only thing you need to watch is that if you tip the front of the trans down the converter may slide out. But you'd really have to get a big angle for that to happen.

And the 21" may be enough- I don't remember. Even if it's not, you can slide the trans off the jack, drag it over to the wheel well and tip it nose down to get it out. The only trick there is to be able to move YOU around under the car.

And be careful. the trans is not terribly heavy, but it will hurt if you get under it and it falls.
