I am building a 454 with edlebrock alum heads, intake, and cam, 540 hp Is an edlebrock 800 as good as a holley ? Or would some other carb. be a better fit?
From: At my Bar drinking and wrenching in Lafayette Colorado
The Edelbrock "Performer" is a re-pop of the old Carter AFB. GM deemed the AFB obsolete after the 1966 model year... the boys and girls designing carbs for GM are actually pretty sharp, so take that for what it's worth...
There are several very good Holley carbs available for high performance engines, most notably the HP series. The QuickFuel carbs are also excellent carbs, and they have superior metering blocks for very accurate fuel control. I've also had very good luck with the BG carbs. All of these carbs need to be disassembled and set up correctly before running them - they are all set up poorly out of the box. E-mail me for setup and installation articles that apply to all of these square bore carbs: V8FastCars@msn.com
Thanks for the reply, my e-mail is flyingwfarms@yahoo.com I have heard the edelbrock is an inferior carb but I needed to hear it from someone not trying to sell me some other brand.
Edelbrocks are basically Carter carbs. If you wanted dual quads, most OEM applications were Carter. Nearly everyone but Ford used them. Some Vette owners of those 270 hp C-1`S thought that they were better than the FI cars. I didn`t mind, there money was always good and spent well. But a Holley may be better for your application..
