Use GM gear oil for that year rear end. Most any parts counter at a GM service center will have it. Get the GM additive while you're there.

please elaborate why there would be no need for additive? do you like hammering clutches?

TJL, use preferrably 2 bottles of additive. Throw that in first and then top it off w/ ordinary hypoid gear oil, no need for synthetics.

I would suggest the posi additive if it has positraction. Bubba neglected it on one of mine a few years back and it wasn't long till it started crow hopping around corners.

Yes absolutely,if you have a posi trac rear end you need the additive, thats why they put the warning decal on the fill plug.

GTR1999 did mine about a year ago. He said to synthetic. He used LUCAS 85/140 HD Gear Oil and GM additive. I ran it for 500 miles...I think, and changed it out with more of the same. He is considered by many on this forum as THE man for the job, so who am I to question him???

Gary, if you read this...no issues yet, and I don't anticipate having any!!!

Gear oil and posi additive. I didn't use GM stuff I used some other kind and it worked just fine no clattering. I just threw the whole bottle in and called it good.

guess I am the exception. I used Amsoil in my 72 when I rebuilt it. No posi additive. My Father in law was an Amsoil dealer, Drag racer for over 30 years. One of the originators of Oswego Dragstrip and ran a servicestation for over 30 years. He was sold on Amsoil. Convinced me to go this route and said the additive was not required with Amsoil. I never had an issue with it. He has passed away now. Run Lucas 85-140 and additive in the 63 as per Gary's recommendation.

I was warned by Moser not to use synthetic in any of their rearends...I have used it in the past on my Camaros with no issue, but I use nothing but good quality conventional oil with GM Posi additive now.

Yep..change it after 500 miles. Hope you had a drain plug installed. If not, you'll have to break out the old pump.

AMSOIL's best gear lube is the Severe Gear series. They now make this in several grades:
AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90
AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w110
AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w140

The reason the friction modifier additive is not required with these gear lubes is that AMSOIL blends them with the additive already in it. FYI, I use the 75w90 version in my 02 Z06.
