Get a can of Sea Foam from any parts store. You can add it to the gas, the oil, and suck it up through the vacuum lines.
It'll work wonders, and it's not snake oil at all. Also, put some water in a fine mist spray bottle, and spray a bit every now and then over the carb as the engine is running.
You should see a bunch of black crap come out of the exhaust, as it breaks up and expels some buildup from and around the valves.

if it was fuel injected i would tell you to use techron injector cleaner this stuff is incredible.....not sure if it would do anything on a carb though...it costs about $10 a pint and is good stuff

Good advise to clean out the carbon. If that easy fix dont work, then its time for a tune up or maybe some carb work on that 78.
Try the Seafoam...it's good stuff. If that doesn't help. find out what the real problem is and take care of it.
Other than that, about the only gasoline additives worth a damn are a good isopropyl fuel treatment during the cold weather or a fuel stabilizer for long term storage.
My Dad used to swear by Marvel Mystery Oil, but that was years ago and technology is so much different now. I have no idea if that stuff has any benefit anymore, if it ever did.
