How important is the Alt belt guide on a 1979. I have lot mine and was wondering if I really need to buy a new one?

it's not anything critical. Just make sure the belt's good & tight so there's no excessive belt slap to make it hit the hood insulation.

Just guessing....... It was put there to stop the belt from hitting the hood if it broke.
