I went to get my 81 a new air filter and they convinced me to buy this K&N Air Filter that you never have to replace, just clean, based on the fact it increases performance. Can any one confirm this, or are they just pulling the wool over my eyes?
They are right. It's a good filter and using the proper clean and re-oil kit you can re-use it for many years. I have had several K&N filters and they are worth the money.

I run them in all my cars and like them. They claim a 3-5 horsepower gain. I don't know about that but my cars run good with them and psychologically I think they must be faster
They are correct, but you will never feel the difference unless you bought a complete open element air cleaner, and even then its "iffy".
A K&N filter in a stock air cleaner housing wont add enough power to feel.
They're pricey, but I have one on my 81. I like the idea of never having to replace it. As for the performance, I don't think that there's any real difference, but before I changed the exhaust, you could kinda hear the air whistling as it went into the carb.
