Default New engine/transmission-HELP!

I've got a 76(automatic) and just installed a brand new GM 350/290HP engine. As soon as I try to break in the engine the transmission gives out(clutch burned out according to mechanic). Is this normal? Also, the mechanic tells me he can get a rebuilt transmission for $650. Does anyone know of a better deal out there? Also, I'm already over budget for getting this car in tip top shape(getting married this fall and want to get my car expenses out of the way before then) and need to know what else to expect. What else can go wrong? Will the rear end go out on me next or what? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

$650 doesn't sound like very much for a "well" rebuilt 350 tranny. Is there a warranty with it? As for what goes wrong next, that is anyone's guess. However, you say the car is in tip top shape. If that's true, you shouldn't have any major trouble with it for quite some time.

I'm "trying" to get the car in tip top shape. Here's what's been done so far: All front end components have been replaced. New tires, trim rings, brakes, frame supports and bushings, new exhaust, replace all floors, new carpeting, new paint about 2 years old with matching pin striping. New wiring, all new whaether striping and molding. Now I've got the new engine put in, and am about to put in a new transmission. If something else on this car breaks I'm gonna go crazy. Any suggesstions on the transmission to get?

Be careful with that one though...4L60 is just the newer name designation for a TH700R4; there are no real differences. They were available in 93 only (In F-bodies, not sure about other apps), and use a TV cable. The 94-newer 4L60E is electronic, and will need an expensive contol box to run (unless you are running an LT1 or LS motor, in which case the PCM would operate it).
