All of these overpriced aftermarket systems...someone's got a good scam going. There are several good books on GM fuel injection systems, both port and throttle body. Corvette Fever did an article on a $200 junkyard TBI swap several months back. Lots of good info at this site: http://diy-efi.org/gmecm/ - there is a forum (currently offline) at gmecm.mine.nu. Thirdgen.org has a lot of good EFI info, too.
If you go junkyard tpi, you can upgrade to an LT1 manifold for 200 if you have 1, or 400 including the manifold at LT1intake.com. They will suppport more horsepower if you want to upgrade later.... it would not need modified to fit your vortec heads.

The Lt1 intake will not fit Vortec heads. The bolt pattern is different. The guy at "LT1intake.com" is nonexistant these days...has been shut down for over a year or so. He will not respond to any emails (too busy he claims). The Lt1 intake can be modified to work on Gen 1 small block heads by redrilling the bolt pattern and adding a distributor mounting pad to the back for a distributor.
You can buy a Vortec TPI intake then use a typical TPI setup (plenum, throttle body, runners and fuel rails). The special intakes are about $400 new. Edelbrock and Scoggin Dicky sell them.
