While looking for a ground for my new radio, i found what appears to be some type of large clip or bracket on the passenger side transmission tunnel this is next to the radio. if you remove the side panel it is right there. will this work for a ground? Also i found a flat plug with three wires connected to it, black, gray and yellow. Is this the original radio plug and if so can i use the black wire from it as a ground? thanks..Don
Yes, black/gray/yellow was for original radioand the black wire goes to ground. The bracket on top the trans tunnel was the support for the back of the radio.
To be sure, just use an ohmmeter to check continuity between that "ground" point and battery ground. If not, just run a wire from a black ground wire in the area to that connection point. (I'm assuming that this is for the tuner head and doesn't need much current carrying capability.)
You will want to make sure the cluster gages are grounded too. The PO did not connect a ground to the cluster after installing a new radio and they did not read correctly. When I turned on the headlights they jumped around. I added a ground to the back of the cluster and that fixed them.
Redwing, thanks a ton for that picture. I think i need to start taking them every time i take something apart. one more question, where did you run the other end of the white wire to? Thanks...Don
I ran it to the metal reinforcement up under the top panel. I think it is part of the bird cage. The bird cage has a ground attached to the frame by the #1 mount. I checked with my meter and it was grounded back the battery. You could of just attached to the black radio ground wire though.
