I have a rusted door frame that I'm going to toss (not worth fixing, it's real bad)...is is worth cutting the skin off and saving? One skin is perfect the other has the common hinge cuts in it and a small corner missing...
i was told many years ago if it is from a vette don;t throw it away you may need it someday or someone might want to buy not everyone has a money tree or rich relatives, they buy broken or worn out parts and refurbish them for their own projects, that way they biuld cheap cars ,not everyone cares about ncrs or showcars ,most just drive and have fun
Couldn't agree more. Throw nothing away from a Vette. The next time you go to a Vette flea market, take a look at some of the "apparent" junk people are buying and selling.
Ran into the same situation on my 68. Had to replace both doors due to rust, so I completely stripped the old doors of everything(latch hardware, window tracks, hinges, etc.) that could possibly come off, and took a hot air gun and a putty knife to the door skins. All that hardware will come in handy one day
Thanks all for your input...I certainly agree with keeping the good parts, and I plan to keep all of the hardware....the skins were my major concern...
Wondering if I should cut the skin away first with a muffler cutter or similar, then use the heat gun and knife, or just try to take it off from the frame without cutting it..
682xlr8, did you heat the metal side and get in there with the putty knife, any advise on taking the skin off?
