Default Question on engine & transmission pull

I am in the process of pulling my engine and transmission. My exhaust is welded together all the way back. Should I cut it behind the cross member so I can remove it from under the car. Or just leave it in place and work around it. I think I can get the engine out without cutting it but it looks like it will be a PIA. Just wandering what you guys did.

P.S. This is an automatic car so I can drop the cross member if the exhaust was removed

My car has the same problem: I just drop the X-member with the pipes and drag it out of the way....

Does droping the cross member make it easier to engine & trans. together? since I am changing from 350 to 2004r the X member will need to be removed anyway. not trying to hijack post just simular question

Not a problem, just don't forget those exhaust hangers mounted to the tranny and it will slide right out.

V rod,
In a word yes…..I got the engine and transmission out without cutting the exhaust. As kplot34 said (he was here) I was hung on the exhaust hangers that attach to the tranny. Those things looked like they were attached to the cross member.
I am doing the same swap and going to a 200r4. I don’t think you absolutely need a new cross member. I am hoping to modify mine because I don’t like the design of the new ones offered and the cost doesn’t help.

HI Kev, how you feeling?? buzzy as usual??

I feel the cross member needs cutting on the bottom of the loops, and then rewelded/reinforced on the topside, which is much cheaper than any aftermarket support....that way the thing is free to drop out sideways, and/or the exhaust can unbolt and the whole damn mess slid out back end.....

however I think the tranny and engine are best pulled separately, as there is a LOT less MESS from the inevitable draining OIL, and the vertical requirements of having that tranny shaft damn nearly straight up when pulling in and out....not enough room cause of radiator or cross support, or even the front body, ultimately...it's a bitch not worth fighting over....I did it that way ONCE on another car, much larger car...WAY much larger, and never again....

NOW if you got a crew, fine,...but I work alone for the most part....

my car has side exhast so hangers will not be an issue read where you can get a cap for trans end. most say pull together some seperate. This is my first rodeo so I am going to give a shot at together. have xmember coming from BTO plus no asscess to cutting & welding here at home. wish me luck thanks Tom
