Default Another Headlight Question

Early 68 vert. Replaced vacuum system for headlights and wiper door, also replaced actuator relay for headlights (only 1 on 68) and one for wiper door. Both headlight actuators as well.

I think the headlights work too well. When opened, they push past where they should stop and lock in the up positions. The linkage gets over-extended. They will come down on their own but a with great big pop that shakes the car.

Wondering how to adjust (searched forum but wasn't anything I found related to this). Tried adjusting the cleavis and the stop bolt on the outside of each can. Nothing helping.

Also checked AIM and have some ideas but it seems like what I've already tried.

Any help out there?

Brian

The linkages are supposed to lock into a position that looks over-extended. That's how they stay up, since the vacuum doesn't hold them up. They hold themselves up, and vacuum has to act against the linkages to get them to fall.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think they should hyper-extend and lock up like that though. You can tell the actuators are struggling to break the "lock" and when the do, it comes down hard.

I put them in the up position, removed the vaccuum hoses and tried to pull down manually. Had to reach up into the linkage with a wrench and really give it a tug to break the lock.

Got the passenger side to work ok by adjusting the stop bolt, it doesn't lock up and stays up. No problem with it coming down. I always thought the springs are what provided the tension to keep it up? Had two of the springs off and it would not stay up, with no vaccum, but put them back and it stayed up fine.

Actuators are brand new so rubber gasket and other parts are fine.

Perhaps the linkage is just worn and I need to replace it?
