I recently bought an aftermarket dipstick for my 82. I cant seem to get it into the hole ( a personal problem?). I the 82 dipstick sleeve thinner than the usual? Everything else was proprietary to this car so I won't be surprised if this is the case.
Anyone have any thoughts on this???
Sometimes they take some persuasion to get them in...and I don't mean to buy it a drink.
What I do when they are stubborn, and won't tap in, is lightly file the tube at the end, thinning the walls just a little bit, until it taps in snug.
At this point its me that needs the drink. You're probably right about the filing...it is chrome. I'll give that a shot and see what shakes.
Thanks
Fred
The aftermarket dipstick was made to fit a certain size tube. Call or contact the manufacturer to see what that size should be. Your tube could be too small for it. If so, you can either get a new dipstick or replace the tube with one that will accept your dipstick.
P.S. Don't forget to calibrate that dipstick to your engine's oil level requirements.

I've never calibrated a dipstick, but I assume that I want to install it, make sure the correct amount of oil is in the crankcase and mark the stick accordingly? Sound about right?
Yep. But after you've filled it, let it settle, then check it COLD and put a mark on the dipstick for that; then run it till up to normal temp. Shut it off for a few minutes, check it HOT and put that mark on the stick. If the HOT & COLD marks on the stick are very close to what is already on there, let it be. Otherwise, grind down the mfg. marks and put your own on it.
