I've degree'd the last four motors I've built, and haven't found one yet off by more than a degree or two. Doesn't hurt to check though....

I always degree the cam in, because if you know exactly where the cam timing is, you can retard or advance it to enhance the power or torque if required. It is unusual for me to accept the manufacturers straight up setting unless I have run it through the DCesk Top Dyno to see what can be gained by leaving it at zero.
The other variables are the timing sets or gear drives, some brands are better than others.

Thanks guys! The motor will be on the stand with the heads off so now is the time to learn. With my new Isky cam and the lift and duration being a good bit higher than the Comp I had I definately think it will be worth the time and effort. The Isky was ordered custom so hopefully the little details will be checked and double checked and QC is a little stricter than the off the shelf stuff. I have been looking at the proform degreeing kit. It is around $85 compared to the Comp kit which is $135 but has a video. Am I better off just buying a kit or peicing things together to use? I know I need a dial indicator, wheel and piston stop and pointer.

Thanks
Wade

I fooled around with advancing the cam in my engine a few years ago. In the end I toook out the offset bushing and went back to the straight up position. As far as degreeing a new cam. I think it is a good practice.
