This doesnt make any sense. What happens when you put your old parts next to the new ones. ARE THEY THE SAME???? The geometry between the parts shouldnt change if they are the same.
Yes the parts are the same, and no it doesnt make sence thats why i am on here asking lol.. I will have pictures tomorrow, its easter today so no working on the car lol.
Those are bigger pulleys then mine has on it. do you have other pulleys laying around? thinking maybe you have a mix up. Being you had an inch gap before and the old pump still makes them rub I dont have a clue. All I can think of is spin the engine over and watch the bottom pully making sure it runs true. There is nothing that can make that big of difference besides the wrong pulleys
my 75 has always had very minimal space between pulleys. maybe a 16th of an inch or less. my pulleys seemed to touch also until i tightened them with all bolts then they seemed to center perfectly. you also want to make sure no gasket material is left and tighten the water pump bolts so that it sits flush with block. here is a pic of mine
just measured and top pulley without smog pump pulley measures 6 1/4 inches and bottom pulley measures 7 3/4. both measurement were taken from largest diameter lip.. hope it helps oh another idea maybe bolt holes in water pump are larger than normal letting it sit farther down. also these are the original pulleys that came with the car

...or....
the after market pump center (of the pump part itself) sits lower in relation to the mounting bolts on the engine than the stock pump did.
I thought the aftermarket pump was lower also but he tried the stock pump and the same problem. The pump pulley holes shouldnt be an issue because it should center on the pin in the middle as well as the dampener pulley. Wish you lived close I would check it out. Have you turned the engine over and watched the lower pulley?
