hey guys I finally started to mess with my horn today and when you plug the black relay in under the dash the horn immediatly goes off and after a minute or two the relay gets hot.. What should i check for to make it function properly
And if replacing the relay does not work, as it didn't for me, then more than likely there are some wires exposed or crossed in your steering column. I am starting to find that it is a fairly common problem, specially if you have the tilt tele column.
As for a fix, well......I haven't actually FIXED mine yet, though my new ghetto rigged temp push button horn looks kinda cool, for now, lol. And, it got me past the inspection...which is all that mattered.
If you have a T/T steering column, check the spring contact under the hub and the plastic insulator under it on the main body of the column. I had a problem where the spring slid up and contacted the hub when the column was collapsed.
check the horn button retainer. if it doesn't have the proper spacing, the circuit will be closed. i got a repo retainer ring and every time i hit the slightest bump, the horn would blow. got a nos replacement and it solved the problem.
