Us small block guys have to be able to talk about something. Everything we do to our small blocks is just to make them run like big blocks
 Heck we all know there is no substitute for cubic inches. Thats why all us small block guys are stroking to 383 and beyond to 427 and up. We just want what Big Brother BB has. Especially at resale time. :troll
Didn't think you were coming down on somebody else's car. When I said '69 was a good year I was referring to the "Mamas and the Papas," Jimmi Hendrix, Creme, Raquel Welch, "The Graduate," .........you get the idea. Regards, nice meeting you on the forum.
'74 Turbocharged 350, "Molested to Perfection", class of 71
Gee that's strange... My 427 gets 15mpg average. Uses no oil to speak of....1/2 quart or so between oil changes. My car is not hot... A/C works great even in Florida summers. How many clutches do you burn up trying to start up with you small block? :jester
Checked out your website. You have done some amazing work. I am truely impressed. I know you were not putting down my 69. I thought it was a funny coincidence. I was just teasing with you and keeping the post thread light hearted. All in fun buddy. Best wishes, and a big wave in your rear view mirror. With your ride that is the only place you will ever see me. :seeya
Yeeeeeeeeeeeehuuuuuuuuuuuh.
This is my kind of post. Sitting here and can't help grinning. And of course can't help giving my $0.05.
Small Block:
If I wanted to race my Vette, this is what I'd do: Take an SBC stroke&bore the hell out of it. Add a twin turbo setup with EFI and lots of intercooling. 800+ absolutely streetable and reliable, but also racing HP shouldn't be any problem at all. At the wheels! Of course this engine would be not used for drag-racing. There a BB would do better, but if you want to take a turn......
BB:
It's coooooooooooooool
I just love the feeling of hitting the pedal at 1500rpm and that beast just *PULLS*. And the sound on top of it! Strictly cruising, but that's what I bought the car for and that's what it does exceedingly well.
And yes, two years ago I helped a friend to turbo-charge his Miata. He outperforms my 69BB in EVERY respect. Acceleration, Braking, Cornering- you name it. I still wouldn't trade :D Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the Vette is sure to attract some looks. The Miata........... NOT!
Your small block is very impressive. I really enjoyed reading through your detailed list of premium components on your site. I won more than a few bets with my 355 cid small block when I copied Chevy's Trans American race engine with dual Holley dp's on a crossram. The way it ran guys wouldn't believe it was a small block until I opened the hood! You have taken this engine to new heights and made it even more drivable at the same time.
After experiencing how well my new LS6 motor runs I quickly fantasized about a build-up of one for my 69. Cam and exhaust changes alone would get me easily into the 500+ range. Adding 80 cubic inches and a more free flowing intake, absolutely no doubt 700 crisp, right now horsepower is within reach. You have done the same thing with the old but still very potent block design by adding newly engineered pieces to it in a complimentary or should I say coordinated fashion.
I have always believed one could never have enough horse power, but with current technology maybe my day has come. Your normally aspirated engine is just about the perfect ultimate motor for a c3 - tt's are another matter. I just can't imagine driving a road course with more horsepower than a LeMans 1st place overall winner!
I must admit I get utterly confused when someone mentions dropping tons of money and mods into a SB but then compares it to a stock big block.
Where does it say that you can't throw centrifugal super chargers and all the other stuff into a BB? If its the weight just buy an aluminum block and there you are. Might not have gas money but that isn't the point, is it?
BTW for the ultimate in HP I saw was a write up that some nut put a gas tubine in his 'Vette. It was shaft driven.
I apologized for my bad choice of words.
No. No one person made this comparision.
I am sentenced with driving a 4 cylinder the rest of the year as penance.
Compared to my daily driver (2.0L) my 350 is a big block. Mad torque. I would love to drive a BB. I haven't ever had a chance though. I must throw this in too. I have a friend that has built a 454 it runs low 11's here in colorado, I can't wait to ride in it.
Bottom line? A big block can be sized up into the 700 ci range. That is about the only thing a big block can do that a small block can't. Monty has really changed my mind about small blocks. I mean really- can we still call a 400+ ci block "small"? If it wasn't for guys like Monty, I would probably be happy with my "puny" 522 :)
