Default Need Starter Info

As some of you may know I am switching to a 4 speed from my auto. I heard something about having to switch out the starters. Does this have to do with the nose cone on it? If that is the case can I have someone press a new one on or do I need to get a new starter?

If the ring gear on the flexplate and flywheel are the same diameter and have the same number of teeth, it should work.
If not, the nose just bolts on. Very easy to change.

The nose cone is the main difference in the 2 starters. The starter brace will also need to be changed if you do swap noses. Easy swap as I have done this a few times. Try a starter/alternator place for a nose cone if you do not already have one. If that does not work I have purchased inexpensive rebuilt starters just for the parts in the past.

So I have to change the nose cone or is it optional?

You can use the same original starter as long as it`s a 168 tooth ring gear on the flywheel which I believe is the case. ..

Do I still have to change the nose cone or can I just say screw it and pop the old one in?

as I recall, the teeth of the flexplate sit closer to the engine than the teeth of the flywheel. So its more than # of teeth. My starter was $70.

Here's my web page devoted to my auto to manual swap:

It's not as 'how to' as I wanted it to be, but will give you an idea. No jokes about the old guy in the pictures..............

I dont know how you got that starter to work. It`s actually a HD {heavy duty} 396/427 starter. The correct application would be the aluminum staggered nose starter. This also raises the application of the late model permanent magnet starter that is a light weight direct fit metric starter You would need the bolts too for this to be complete.

you "may" have to buy a secondlong bolt that goes straight up through the starter into the block. As I recall, the automatic in mine had 1 short, 1 long. Where the standard version had 2 long. (see post above)

I ordered the manual starter bolts from zip a while back so I at least had some of my bases covered. Starter is in and wired up. Off to work.

I swear I still have one of those in my garage that was used on my small block 4 speed application at one time. I know it was originaly for a BB application and I did have to swap bolts. Worked fine untill I decided to redo everything back to original style parts.

Who knows, maybe this is just another one of those brain farts I have been having lately.
