ive got a burned out high beam on a 70 vette with FO. Can i just get a generic bulb from a hardware store or do i need to get a bulb specially designed for FO setup
A standard high beam bulb will work. Some bulbs have some black paint between the plug connections where the FO end looks for the light. Remove the black paint with thinner before installing the bulb.
Don't forget to look for the little plastic tubing section that is between the back of the headlamp and the electical connection when you remove the bad lamp. That piece is there to help transmit more of the bulb's light into the fiber-optic system. If you find it (most have been 'lost' years ago), just re-install it as you found it when you put in the new lamp.
It is just placed between the lamp and the connector. Over years of heating, it tends to stick to the lamp...but it isn't glued in place....it was just placed over the bulb "seal".
I agree with the above. In addition, I also make sure I purchas the sealed beams that have the "nipple" at the back of the bulb in between the electrical connections as this is where the light comes from for the fiber optics. Some bulbs have a rubber plug of some sort and I don't think that will transmit the light to the fiber quite as well.
Wagner makes bulbs with the nipple as well. The only place I could find them was NAPA. When you reassemble push the fiber optic cable into the plug as far as it can go and use a dab of rtv to hold it place. Otherwise it migrates back into the plug a bit.
