Well, your old school, so a 1975 HEI. But I would install a Crane or MSD ignition box and a matching, stronger coil. I think the multiple spark would help with low RPM pull on the street, The rev limiter might come in handy and it would probably pull a little harder in the upper RPM's (6500 and up) as well.

Default Old School aye,

Well maybe, ,,old, yes. School ..., Lawyer and a few other unmentionable things. Anyway. Would you accept 11.4 et. at 120+ mph trap speed with a basically no frills 'stock' HEI ignition and 'stock' LS7 engine in a 68 Camaro?

PS, no vacuum advance and plugs gaped at .035 and yes I dual purpose street use it too

Hey Mike,

I didn't know that Bubba's lived north of the Mason Dixion line. All the Bubba's down here drive pickup's with glass packs and stickers that say "will hunt for food" except our most famous one Bill Bubba Clinton, but since he now lives in New York he had to drop bubba from his name. A real Bubba doesn't worry about what Team Force is running. He's trying to compeate with Team Lawn Boy in the Friday Night Mower races. Just a little kidding

Not trying to be confrontational, but I've never seen that combination. Can you expound on that?

That motor is pulling hard. With the specs it has it is going to. Might be more comfortable on the street with the upgrades.

That's because there was none. The (Corvette only) transistor controlled breakerless ignition was a magnetic pulse type. It's right there in the Chassis Service Manual.
Cheers,
Pete

When I bought my '81 2.5 years ago it was not running. Before even trying to run it, I turned the motor into a 383 stroker with a moderate cam for 6800RPM. Because of the ignition's age and condition, I decided to replace it. I made my decision based on this forum. I saw that it was usually a pretty good debate. I decided to go with Summit's own brand of MSD. The rev limiter gives serious piece of mind. Summit's MSD is not that much more expensive than a "good" or modified HEI.

I love it.

Sincerly,
Bubba

Typo, corrected in post. The TI was breakerless. I believe they used them on some Camaro's and Pontiacs too. They were a popular modification when I was in High school. Worked for Plano Auto Parts and Machine Shop. My boss Darrold Cutsinger was one of the originators of Oswego Dragstrip along with my Father in law Bob Cottingim. We used to build and repair a lot of drag race stuff back then for the oswego and US 30 guys and the TI, Magnetoes and dual point were the hot ignitions then. Seemed like Blue Streak points were the HD ones. Stiffer spring to reduce point bounce at high RPM. They were for the guys that couldn't afford the good stuff and still wanted to race....(me)............ .

Wow i never thought 1 question could 'spark' (pun intended :-) ) such a debate with bubba being thrown in at will.

Just to recap, its a 383 with mods on heads, intake, carb etc, the old coil has been thrown out, the dizzy is looking a bit sad, so replacement of the whole ignition is the way forward, dizzy, cap, coil, leads etc.

I think thro all the posts and confusion that we all agree that to replace standard GM would be as expensive as after market (with or without hype and bubba) so the question is:-

I have to replace, what would you replace with? and would an ignition box be needed/preferable?

Maufacturers name and product number would be great
