Does anyone know if i can supercharge a 74 big block without doing anything to the bottom end??? how much boost can it handle without putting too much stress??? I have a 74 with a big block. ive taken the heads off and had them ported and a 3 angle valve job. i also added a torquer 2 manifold and a holley 750 carb. Ive got polished underdrive pullies. should i just go with a big cam?? im looking for about another 75 horsepower. the previous owner put a very mild cam in. im not sure of the specs. I will be adding some pics soon. ive put about 2500 into the suspension already. ive got the bug and i cant wait to get this thing on an autocross track.
I wouldn't try putting a supercharger on a stock bottom end for a couple reasons.
1.Without changing the comp. you will be very limited to the amount of boost.
2.When you blow it apart is will ruin your topend.
3.If you can't afford the bottom end to support the topend that you want. Then you really can't afford the topend.
Yes, it can be done. In fact, you'd have been money ahead, if you'd bypassed the "sexy" stuff to the engine, and just bolted up a blower, to begin with...
Go with a 174-cubic inch miniblower.
It'll deliver the extra "oomph" you need. Limit boost to 4-5#, NO MORE.
It'll give you what you want... but if your rings are sloppy, it'll aggravate the situation, so keep this in mind.
Who makes the miniblower? Can you get a manifold with the rectangular BB intake runners?
Weiand is the only real game in town. With 4-5 lbs. of boost, you should be ok with the engine as-is. Don't start getting crazy with the camshaft, it'll set you back on $$$, and you'll still have to get most of the way into the engine, for very little gain over what the blower alone can give you... (At least, at these boost levels. )
As long as the bottom-end of your engine is sound, it should provide a lot of smiles, for very little cash outlay. Of course, you'll have to consider a taller HOOD, but such is the price you pay, for the toys.
wow thanks for all the info. i know i know about the flashy crap (manifold) and all the other stuff.. but i was just looking to beef it up a little now i have caught the bug. and yeah i dont have the money to pull the motor out and build the bottom end up. but..... when i pulled the oil pan out the bottom end looked like it was aluminum.. ive seen pics of the crank and it looks stock.. but the rods looked aluminum and i beam and the pistons were definately aluminum... but since i dont know exactly what was done before i purchased the car i was just basing the question off of a stock motor. i think this supercharger is the way to go for me... ill write you guys back with pics if i make my decision soon... 4 psi will be great i dont plan on going bigger than that .
