My 82 Collector car has 41k original miles. While driving at about 30mph, I heard a terrible sound under the transmission. It sounded like an explosion accompanied by groaning, rasping and squelling noises. It was quite scary. Also the speedometer went wild. I lost all power and it rolled to a stop. Shut off engine. Started car, shifted into drive and drove slowly to a repair shop literally 50 feet away. Shifter then became stuck in reverse and would not move at all when I gave it gas. Mechanic thought it was the shifter cable originally, but then determine there was something wrong inside the tranny. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you
82 was an early year for the 7004R, it was known for problems, they sorted most of them out later on. The 2004R iMHO is a better tranny, deeper first gear and longer OD 4th. It also does not require as many Mods as the early 700's
I built mine from scratch, everything included for around $900 and its about the same as the BTO stage 3 that they sell for $1800
Why go through all that to put a TH2004R in the car, when he has a Th700R4 already? A later Th700R4, even stock, would be far easier, cheaper, and require no changes to be made to the car. Granted, the Th2004R is great when you have a Th350 already, but for a Th700R4 car it doesn't make sense.
If it already has a 700R4 I would put the same back in. It will be cheaper and more friendly with the fuel economy gears it probably has. Either have the one you have in the car rebuilt and an update kit put in or get a re manufactured one.
First off yes replace the torque converter.
As far as weather to rebuild or replace it really depends on what is wrong with your transmission. By the sounds of your problem it will be best to replace it. One good think about a reman is you will get a warranty.
An update kit is just as the name says, it is a kit with updated parts. Nothing to big just things like seals, valve body parts... It takes care of the problems that early model transmissions had and updates them the way the factory did to cure the problems. You won't have to worry about that if you get a reman unit.
One last thing. MAKE sure the shop that does it flushes out the trans. cooler and lines. It really sounds like you broke some hard parts and you don't want medal debree getting into your new transmission.

plus, it's a CE. don't want to stray too far from stock and accidentally devalue it.
Not to but in, but I have a BTO 700r4 that has 2500 miles on it. Just removed from my 78 corvette. I've changed to 4-speed. It's a stage 2. I have the complete conversion kit that takes a th350 vette to 700r4. Was selling for $1500. If you only wanted the tranny, I'll let it go for $900. Best thing is it's located in Waverly,NY 14892.

Should the torque converter be replaced also? Thanks
YES, and there is no such thing as an update kit for the early 700's...there is a huge change in the valve body design which included something called auxilliary valve body'...or something like that, I forget...but I had a LATE 700 in my '72 untill about 2-3 years ago I got it outta there in favor of the more driveable, durable 200 4r which weighs about 50 lbs less also, so I"m told......
you stick with a 700, you need put in a later one, like from '93 or so, and then put in a TRANS GO shift kit, accept no other, the Superior/Fairbanks kit I had in my 700 was a POS, and the tranny never did perform well, no matter what....
