Default Thoughts on engine build.

As I consider the many options for my engine, I Know one thing for sure, is that I want smooth idle And a quiet car, at least when its standing still. Which brings me to my question.
How is it that you can hardly hear these new model vettes until they step on the gas and go screaming down the street? I would love to have all that power but I dont care for the big lopey cam sound.
Can someone please give some insight on this?

Thanks

Stephen

Is it possible that the roller cams enable this behavior?

Use a stroker with a good sized torque convertor (if automatic)

As a stroker, you can get more cam with less penalty for idle. I use a Crane Cam that's mild (272H) with 1.6 Crane roller rockers. The lobe seperation of the cam if in a 350, could cause a lope. With the added stroke, my engine idles smooth.

I use a custom made 2500+ stall convertor and factory 3:08 rear end gears. If I want to wind it up with my foot on the brake and do a smoky burnout, I can easily redline the engine and create lots of tire smoke.

* or * if I just choose to goose it from a stop light, by the time the convertor locks up it will get me as much tire spin as I wish and still send the '76 up & through the gears nicely.

Look around for a stroker or small block 400 and a short duration cam. I went with the sb400.
