Snap ring broke or more likely yoke worn down. The only way to know is to remove the diff and pull the cover to look. Joints are leaking as well as the exhaust being shot.
The yoke isn't going to fall out. The rear suspension will move under load and you'll feel it. If the yoke is worn that much it is beyond the case hardening and will wear much faster,if the yoke starts to hit the housing it will grind the iron down until it hits the seal and the housing will be junk.
would this be like a clunk or jerk from the rear end? ive felt something like that twice over about 2 summers now. both times going around a turn at low speeds. never was able to figure out what that was.
in the event that i do drop the diff... how hard/expensive would this be to fix, providing this is my only problem?

The level of difficutly removing the diff depends on what you have for tools and just how rusted it is.
The options for rebuilding could be from $500 $2,000 all depending on who does the job and how they do it. For $500-$1000 you're looking at a pretty basic rebuild. Not all the parts used by places are the same, you could get a cheaper job with cheaper parts, but would you want to?
How hard is it to rebuild. For someone experienced with the correct tools it's not as much how hard but rather involved are they going to be?
The old saying certainly applies here, "you get what you pay for"
Good luck, take a look at Jeremy's post on what's involved, that job is not like one you'll find in a catalog.
