Ignition Switch
Also let's get our terminology on a common basis. The ignition lock cylinder is the part in the steering column head where you insert your ignition key. (The lock cylinder is the same regardless if you have a tilt or a standard column.) The ignition switch on your locking column is mounted on top of the steering column jacket down under the dash. (There is a unique switch for standard columns there is a different switch for T&T columns.) Unfortunately making the switch less accessable to thiefs also makes it more difficult to service.
Also, when you rotate your ignition key, you rotate the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder rotates a small plastic gear. That gear engages a small die cast rack which translates your rotating motion to a linear motion of a rod that reaches down under the dash to the ignition switch.
So your problem could be in the ignition lock cylinder, the linkage system reaching down to the ignition switch, or the switch itself.
So let's get started in diagnosing your problem.
If it is a tilt column do you find turning the ignition key any easier or more difficult if you tilt the column up or down?
Jim
It's the key cylinder the was causing me problems. I used some graphite powder lube and she working like a charm. Thanks guys for your help.
I can now concentrate on getting my dash lights to go on. Fuses blow (instrument & lighter) as soon as their installed?
