OK this is my first rebuild and most likely the first of a long list of amaturish questions, so bear with me. I do have a few rebuilding books on hand so I'm not fully lost ...yet.
I want to take off as much as possible before I take the block to the machinist for cleaning and measuring...
How do you remove the rod caps without destroying them?
How do you remove the dip stick guide tube (the one that's inside the block)?
The freeze plugs have been removed from the sides - do I also remove the ones in the back?
The (3 small) oil galery plugs in the front are pressed in, do I just jab a screw driver into them and pull them out?!
does the large plug that is in the middle of the back (adjacent to the back of the cam?) need to be pulled out?
Any other suggestions as I take this new unexplored path
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Let the machine shop take the plugs out, they put the new ones in. It's all part of the job, the price they charge you usually includes that anyway if you are getting it hot tanked and machined
How do you remove the rod caps without destroying them? Just use a six point socket. The're torqued down pretty tight but they will come loose relatively easily. Be sure to stamp them and the rods as 1, 2, 3, etc since you want to put them back into the same location if reusing them.
How do you remove the dip stick guide tube (the one that's inside the block)? The tubes are pressure fit. Some guys will probably have some better suggestions but soak with PB Blaster. Then using ViseGrips lightly attached, wiggle the tube clockwise & counter clockwise while exherting upward pressure. Best to wrap the tube with something to keep the ViseGrips from getting too much bite into the tube.
