I Have A 73 With A Stock 4 Speed The Shifter Hits The Counsel For Reverse First And Third. I Got Under The Car And It Seems Tight. Any Suggestions ? Thanks
You need to adjust the Shifter Support Arm that connects the shifter to the cross member.
In the photo you add washers (6) to set the shifter back.
Hope this helps.

I have fixed this problem if you or someone has had the dash-radio out they did not get the consol mounted far enough forward. It could be wires behind the radio holding everything to far to the rear. The bottom of the dash will move in and out about one inch.

The console is fixed to a bracket on the floor so theres not alot of wiggle room.
You may need to rebuild your shifter to take the slop out or you can switch over to the short throw setting on the linkage.
jim2 527 has something there too. Rebuild it and switch to short throw. I switched mine to short throw about two years ago and it makes a big difference in the feel of the stock shifter.
The arms have two holes and you switch to the other set. This may cause you to need to readjust the arms so you will need to make a tool to fit in the slot to line everthing up in netural.

It really does make a difference..not as much of a sloppy feeling
mine seemed to be ok without making any adjustments aside from changing position of the shifter rods
Have you checked the rig neutral position of the shifter? This will be your starting point. There is a notch before the levers on the shifter module where you lay/hold a driill bit or bolt that fits into the diameter of the semi hole not like a Hurst where you insert rig pin into the shifter.Check for proper neutral adjustment and then throws, going into each gear selected.Later Geno
Gm must have different shifters as mine uses a flat 5/8 wide sheet metal tool to line up the levers for netural adjustment on a 73.

I think you both might be right. My '71 has the flat style alignment fixture and I think GM may have gone to the round hole type alignment in later years of the stock 4-speed shifter. Anyway if you are checking your linkage or switching to short throw it's a good idea to use the alignment fixture just to get everything correct.
