I switched to electric only immediately after seeing the damage the flex fan did to the fan shroud.
In retrospect, why would you even need a fan if you're turning 10,000 rpms? Seems to me you are already moving at least 35 mph, where the airflow through the radiator will be far greater than the fan could possibly pull.

Lost a fan blade on a 51 Ford flathead once...bent the blade stuffing motor in...went for a drive without hood....all I seen was a black blur and then coolant on windshield as blade severed one hose on way out...exciting stuff...wuz 17 at the time...

Sort of like a WWII pilot splashing a bogie up close using guns?? Aaah, the joys of youth, today I'd probably have to be cleaning the front seat.
My 69 GTO came from the factory with a stainless steel flex fan. I thrashed that car good when I was a young man and when I sold the car last year with 180k miles, it still had the original flex fan.
Oops....I'm in trouble. I've got the same fixed stainless fan that I've used on many different cars. I think it's stamped 1981! And it's made many a 7000+ RPM pass.
In fact when I chassis dyno'd it with and without the fan there was very little difference. I had bought electrics to install, but considering the dyno results, the weight of the dual fan assy and the fact it always stayed cool with the flex I put it back on for simplicity's sake. Took the electrics back to the store.
I have the same fan a gkull. It's rated at 10,000 rpm but I only push my ZZ4 to 6000 (where my rev limiter is set to). No problems in the 8+ years running it. Just don't go down to Pep Boys and buy a cheap one. Buy the best, highest rated rpm one out there and you should be fine.
on my 77 i used a flex fan purchased from summit 17 inch one of the higher priced ones never installed a local parts house flex fans. It sounds like if you try to save at first you pay much more later on.
The only reason that I avoided using Flex fans is the design of the blades "flattening"out at higher RPMs....the constant "flexing" of the blades....I suppose that in a high reving race car they are benificial....
Anyway,I have stuck to the fan/clutch set up as it serves my needs and is reliable...only draw back is the new clutches...most do not stay "locked up" long enough like the originnal GM units...
