There was a web site
:-http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~eaztl1/Cruise_control/Cruise_control_recon.htm
that had details for stripping down and rebuilding the cruise control transducer on a C3 . I have finally got around to removing mine and have just gone to print the info and the site is dead. Anyone know if the site was relabelled or does anyone have the details ? I would like to have a go at repair before I order a new one - nothing to loose right?
Thanks in advance
Thanks , I have PM'd him - I hope he gets back to me soon
Anyone successfully fixed their transducer or in reality am I wasting my time and should just go order a remanned unit?
If I remember correctly, Theo's paper walks you through fixing one up. Of course, you gotta figure what it's worth to you to rebuild it, for your time, money and hassle factor. Eckler's has them for about $130.00, which means you might find one cheaper elsewhere.
For the Autozone price mentioned above, I would go the reman'd unit and spend the rest of the time not having to screw with it, driving it...or enjoying an adult beverage.
We fixed it
I figured I had nothing to loose by taking a look inside as I was probably going to end up with the reman unit anyway . So I took it apart and we started meetering it out to check all of the wiring. It turned out that the contacts on the low speed disengage switch were dirty and gummed up and so the contact never made. Effectively the cruise control always saw the car as travelling below 35 mph and so would never engage . We cleaned the contacts , re-installed the CC and took her for a drive and I now have a working cruise control - I am a happy man - It is funny to think that the guy I bought the car from said the cruise never worked in all the time he had it and all just because of a dirty contact.
I too have fixed these units.
keep in mind that most mid '80's units will work in the corvette.
if when you take them apart the copper disks are worn together then you need to get a new unit.
wreckers usually charge about $10.00 for a used unit and you get a 30day return. take your meter with you and check for 6 olms from the engage terminal to the case.
most times that need very little to fix. If a remain is $60 then they spending less tham 1 hour on each. We should be able to fix these.
