The 76S4..... would be the VIN stamp and the whole stamping should match the last numbers of your car's VIN if original.

The WG 11526837 I think would be the Warner Gear part number.

The 13-04, ? not sure.

6-10-75 is the casting date.

130405903, not sure the first numbers but the 903 means aluminum case (902 grey iron, 904 nodular iron).

WG Div, Warner Gear Division

FpC 2, ???

You might still be able to see a painted or ink stamped 2 letter code for the ratios, but these wore off in time.

There should have also been a tag attached that listed the ratio.

If you have the L48, you will have the M20 wide ratio (2.64 low), if you have the L82 it could be the M20 or M21 close ratio (2.43 low).

130405903 - I think you're missing a number in there - should be 1304 065 903, which is just the maincase number for both 4-speeds (close or wide ratio). Unfortunately you can't tell the gearing you have from this.

You need to look below the sidecover on the main case for either an HS or an HW painted on there (goodluck)!

HS = Wide Ratio
HW = Close Ratio

Otherwise, you can pull the tranny and count rings.

The other 13-04... should be the sidecover number, which should continue 13-04-097-901

Ya, and depending on the amount of grime, your chances of finding it are pretty slim.

You could turn your engine over and knowing your rear gear calculate your 1st gear ratio.

Yep, painted. Thats why you'll be dead lucky to find it. Mine was under a bunch of grime, and when I tried to get it off, I'm pretty sure I just scratched off the paint.

Yeah, I couldn't see it down there.

I just assumed that I had a wide ratio, but I was driving down the road a couple days ago and noticed that the police radar display said I was going 30 when I thought I should only be going about 25 (based on my RPM in 3rd gear). Turns out if I changed my gearing to the close ratio, my RPMs are right on with what the gun said. Being as I don't have a working speedo, I really should know my gearing accurately...

I don't know how much I'd trust those radar displays, they have never said the same speed as my spedometer in any car I've driven by them in.

I take it you didn't find the paint?

Yeah, its just that it matched so perfectly to the close ratio, so I thought maybe that's what was put in there. Then vin doesn't match my car, and I can't see any paint down there... so who knows.

So I did my own test.

I was going at 2400rpm in 4th, downshifted to 3rd, and ended up at 3000.
3000/2400 = 1.25

Did this a couple more times...
3300/2600 = 1.27
1700/1400 = 1.21

This all matches pretty good with the info for a M21 here: http://fiedlerh.home.att.net/BW.htm

On a C-1 the W=Warner Gear-the letter G= the month the trans was assembled (Aug) -11= day- 5= year 2= 2nd shift . On a second line is the VIN derivative.(6837) If C-3 are coded the same the trans was assembled on Aug 11, 1975 on the second shift for car # 6837.
