Default 1982 Idle Speed...

Hey folks, what could be likely reasons for idle speed variation? Seems more noticeable now that it's gotten warmer. Without depressing the throttle, the engine does not really want to idle when it's first started. After a few cranks it mostly idles but gets is slow (3-4 hundred rpm, then picks up speed, only to slow down again; repeats this for a few minutes. After it begins to get some engine temperature it all smooths out.

O2 sensor???

No history of issues. It's all stock, or at least any parts were replaced with near-stock parts. This car always cranks right up and runs fine. Has always seemed to be a little sensitive to outside temperature but fine once it gets to its operating temperature.

As always, any thoughts are appreciated.....Mark

A multitude of things can be going on. Vacuum leaks, bad O2 sensor bad CTS sensor, Map Sensor, Bad prom or computer, TBI units out of balance. Bad EGR Valve, Timing could be off slightly...You will probabaly find it is a combo platter. Check out the link. It will show you how tune and balance the TBI units. Do you have a GM shop manual for your car?

My car was Idling way high and the TBI units were out of balance (way off) and I replaced the O2 sensor, the CTS sensor and Tuned the car following the directions in the linc below. Now the car idles at 800 rpm in park and 650 in gear. The car will initailly idle at 1200 rpm for 2-3 minuites at cold start and depending upon the temp outside untill it warms up a little then the idle drops off to what I described above.

Thanks. Makes sense. I'll read the link. I don't think things are too far awry as it seems fine once everything gets to temperature but it's due for a tune-up and checking a few things out. Oh, no shop manual. AIM but that's it, other than internet resources, including the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

Go pick up a GM shop manual for your car it will be year specific. It is the best resource you can have and is well worth the cash. I bought mine off ebay and paid around $30 for it.
