I need to replace the mufflers on my 78. I am pretty good with a wrench but have not done this job before. Is this something I could do myself or should I take it to a shop? I can get up on a rack at the auto-hobby shop on my military base.
Yes you can do it yourself but it comes down to what tools you have available to you. You can obviously cut the old mufflers off and use tube clamps to secure the new ones in. If you have a welder you should weld them for a cleaner and tighter seal.
I don't think a muffler shop would charge a whole lot of labor for a simple muffler swap since there wouldn't be any bending involved.

easy job. buy a set from one of the vette vendors and get the wrap around aluminum clamps for an air tight fit & new hangers. All you need are a few hand tools and you can do the job in an hour or less.
I am retired navy and teach navy Junior ROTC at Millington High in Millingotn TN. The navy's personnel command is here. We have a nice auto hobby shop...the guys there are very helpful.
