I'm fairly sure I'll be doing the 383 thing soon. I'm looking for a little more efficiency than my 350TH can provide, and tearing everything apart to install a manual is not an option.
Is the 200 a good choice? With the 383 I shouldn't need the lower gearing of the 700, right?
Where can I buy a 200? My Summit catalog had parts for them but not the transmission itself.
As always, TIA for all helpful replies

I think that they came in Buick Regals, Pontiac Grand Prix's and Monte Carlos up to the mid-80's, so you might call around to salvage yards to find one that you can build up.

Yeh, obviously from a V8/turbov6 car, with universal/chebby bellhousing so don't get messed up with a BPOC housing, wont fit chebby....
the shift kit you want is a Trans GO.....accept NO other....
make sure you get a 10-13 vane pump, the old 7 vane in my core was shot clean through....looked like it was used to pump concrete in there....
I am looking at doing the same swap so….. I am no expert, but I have done some research. The 383 I am building will be about 400-425 hp and the rear gear is a 355. My plan is to go with the 200r4 from BTO because of the ease of install. All of these things should be a consideration, if you are building a 300-horse motor with a 273 gear the 700r4 might be the way to go because of the lower first gear. You’ll find several different schools of thought on this subject. I would call BTO tell them what you have and let them explain the + and – for your application.
I think you need to talk to a pro and get a better idea of the pros and cons of different trannys. A 200R4 tranny is good and can be built to handle a lot of horsepower. But the cost of modifying a 200R4 to handle 400+ horsepower can end up costing more than a mildly modified 700R4/4L60. Here is an example from gearstar.

This is just an example but you can see from above that, for the same power handling capability there is a $3K difference. this is why you have to be real honest with yourself regarding how this combo will be used and you have to be smart in where you put your money. Saving a few dollars on a tranny that's going to grenade is wasted money. Check out this site for more trannys and info

I am by no means a transmission guy, but is that not over kill for a street car with dot tires. The guys at BTO said a stage 2 would be fine for up to 450 hp and it’s not anywhere near that much money for the whole kit. Again this is my weakest area on a car the whole automatic tranny is black magic to me.

Yeah, I know about the black magic stuff. I think that's why I went with a 4 speed. I can figure gears.
Yes, your right, this is probably overkill. But the point is that you should pick a tranny that is inherently strong enough at the beginning rather than pick a tranny that isn't suitable and try to build it up to handle the extra hp and torque.
I'm sure there are many other rebuilders that have better prices but I'll bet the rule still holds true even for them.
