"the msd pro billit has two timing curve adjusters on the printed circuit board. one for mech. advance, one for vac. advance. i set them both at zero"

Fellas, the above is a direct quote from the OP!!!!
This guy has NO advance dialed in to his MSD Pro Billit dist!!!!!
I don't care if you have a POS dist.w/points you MUST have some way to advance the timing in correlation to the RPM's!!!
Seems like almost EVERYONE except barry and myself are convinced this is a cooling issue and it IS NOT!!!!!
This is a timing issue!

I totally agree with you buddy, as per post #2. Timing sounds like a big piece of this puzzle.

Mark i have to agree with the total timing at 36 but explain this to me-i dont want to argue just conversation-since the op hasn't .If he has 13 degrees of timing at idle and starts the car gets out of it and stands next to the car, lets it run and it overheats or gets over 200-because it sounds like it will-how is this not a airflow- fan related problem.shouldnt have anything to do with total timing.under load i agree.
