hi,come across a problem after a long drive the other day.(76 vette, stock 350) When I turned off engine and then went to restart ,engine hot after long drive,it would not start.the starter would not engage.the starter solenoid would not even click. So I checked for power at the 'S' terminal on solenoid, with test light.light lit up with key in start position, but still wont start.then bridged main battery terminal on starter to "S" teminal, engine turned over ok,but still not starting with ignition switch.when the engine cooled off after 15 minutes starts fine .on short runs (4or 5 miles) the problem does not happen.any help would be appriciated.
hi,thanks for responce .I have stock manifolds ,and the starter is recond .Im still confused as the problem is intermitent and only when the car gets hot after a long run
sounds like a bad starter either replace starter and solenoid,or bring it to a shop and have them do a starter draw test.See how many amps its drawing hot or cold it will tell you instantly.
Unlike the OE C3 starters, Most of the later small starters do Not have big fat field coils that become inefficient when hot ... but instead have permanent magnets that are barely affected by underhood heat.
Do you have Headers? Mine did the same thing. Headers were too close to the starter. $19.99 for heat shield for the starter.
Same problem and above solution. Had just rebuilt my stock 350 a few years ago and the starter wouldn't even click after long summer drives. Try the heat shield idea before spending more money. If that does itlk, you've saved both time and money.

Where did you get the heat shield? I put a heat wrap around my starter and it helps but still not perfect. I figure I need a shield so I'm interested in where you ordered yours.
Before you waste a lot of money buying parts I would advise you to check your battery voltage when this condition happens with a reliable volt meter. This is to rule out and isolate some of the cranking problems connected to restarts.
Those aftermarket parts are NOT a wise choice and it may only mask problems if not thoroughly checked.

Thanks!
I believe most suppliers carry these. I just googled midamericamotorworks.com and did a search for starter heat shields. They've got a pic and price; it's now $29.99... still a lot less than any other fix to start with.
