Having a little problem with the s/s e-brake could use a little help,
Installed all the parts (what a ***** of a job that was) I turned the hub and the retainer spring pops off?? Looking behind the hub there is no clearance for the wheel studs they are hitting the spring and off they go.
Did I get the wrong springs? But they came in a kit from CC, with the right year on the bag and yes the washers are on the right way, what kind of clearance are we looking at?? There is no movement in the hub, in and out so it’s not that,
the spring and little hat sit down below the brake shoe itself. sounds like the shoe assy is not fully seated against back plate. pin must be turned 90 degrees when installed to lock in.
They do sit below the shoe but the studs from the hub protrude below the shoe on the inside thats whats hitting the spring.
The shoes are up snug to the backing plate????
pulled the rotors off myself riveted on and the studs are oem 40k on the car putting all ss on, lines and all,
the oem springs are longer but weaker????????
Seems to me that if you removed the rivets from the rotor they are the original lug studs. Only thing that comes to mind is that the geometry of the new brake shoes is futher outboard than the originals. Check a side by side comparison of the brake shoes to make sure that the mounting area for the springs and retaining hat are the same as the old shoes. I just rebuilt the ebrake system on my 80 and cant for the life of me think of a reason the springs should hit the back of the lug studs. I would hate to think that the bearings are so bad that the whole hub is moved inward and still rotates smoothly so I gotta think that is something with the brake shoes. Maybe a pic if you have one would help in the assessment of the problem.
After a lot of @@%#!@##@# …its done, turns out that the backing plate was bent just a little that moved the shoe just enough to hit the back of the studs .
Don’t know how it got bent ??? its all good now.
