Default Coolant shut off valve...

I have read about folks putting in a shut off valve on the coolant line to the heater core to help cut down the cabin heat. First, does that really work? Second, isn’t that what the vacuum controlled valve already installed is supposed to do?

Most of the time, the vacuum control valve just doesn't work anymore.

I put shut off valves on both lines to heater core. Absolutely works. No circulation or back circulation at all.

I've got 'em on both my heater hoses, and they seem to help. Noticed you're from Mountain Home, home of BassCats!

An add-in valve on the heater core inlet hose is all that you need. Even if the vacuum shut-off valve is working, it is only turned OFF when the whole A/C vent system is OFF.

I agree.

The problem can arise when you turn off the car for a short period. The vaccum valve deactivates and hot water goes on thru to the heater core. You now have heat whether you like it or not. The shut off valve eliminates this.

I got my shut off valves at Napa. You can see the one in the top heater hose in this pic. One just like it in the bottom hose. I usually shut 'em off this time of year, and open 'em back up toward the middle of December. Missed the owner's tournament. Had to work.

The modern plastic replacement works much better.

Not correct. The heater cuts off when the A/C is set to MAX. It shouldn't be too hard to tinker with the vacuum system to make the heater shut off unless it's on Heat or Defrost, but I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet.
