Default Noisy speedometer cable, Help

My 78 has a noisy speedometer cable. I have tach and speedometer (and cruise control) and I am sure noise comes from Speedometer. Any advice or suggestions on how to lube it would be appreciated.

Your speedometer cable could probably use some grease. Your tach is electronic so there should be no noise from it.

First of all, do you have cruise control? If so, there are 2 cables. If not, you just have to deal with one. The cable must be pulled out from behind the speedo. While I recently did my '76, I've never done a '78. In any even, I would first remove the driver seat to allow more access. Then remove the piece of a/c duct blocking access to the rear of the dash. Once this is done, you should be able to see where the cable sheathing enters the speedo. There is a clip like retainer that needs to be depressed. Once this is done, pull the sheathing away and remove the cable. Then clean/wipe the cable off and apply grease to it up to about 3 inches away from the cable end that enters the speedo. As far as lube type, I used white grease very sparingly. I believe auto parts stores sell speedo cable grease. It sounds like a lot of work but I did my '76 in about a half hour or so. Doing this job on your '78 might be a little different but I doubt it. Good luck.

You're welcome. I wouldn't wait too long before taking care of the cable.

Jud,
I do have cruise control...before I get into it, will there be two cables connected to my speedometer? Do I have to pull both? How can I tell which one I need to pull and grease?
Thanks,
Bob

there are two cables, but only one connects to your speedometer.
there is an upper and lower. they connect at the cruise control transducer. its located under the hood, driverside, just below the brake mastercylinder / booster, one cable runs from the trans. to the CC transd. and then one runs from the CCtrans. through the firewall to the speedometer. i had to grease both of mine. and take the cruise control trans. apart and clear and grease it to stop the needle from bouncing around at slow speeds. good luck

See this thread for some advice from Willcox on the right and wrong way to lube speedo cables.

Buy a NEW cable. I tried to grease my old cable, it worked for a while and then started to make noise again.

Perhaps it was a cable problem, but I would bet on the wrong grease.

I used graphite to grease the cable.
